Xiaomen Geology Discovery Center: From Exhibits to the Coast
Explore the six exhibit areas, then read Xiaomen’s coast and Whale Cave with practical visiting tips.
Many north-loop visitors head straight for Whale Cave and leave after photographing its sea arch. Start instead at Xiaomen Geology Discovery Center, then take what you learn outdoors. The exhibits give the basalt coast more meaning.
Begin indoors to read the coast
The scenic-area authority says the center reopened under its current name in late January 2021. Its six areas cover arrival, deep-sea rocks, an egg-shaped projection, dinosaur and plant models, a basalt wall, and exit displays. Use them to form questions before going outside.
With children, choose one rock to look for rather than memorizing every panel. Compare models with the real landscape. Exhibits explain scale, while wind, light, and tide add what a gallery cannot.
See Xiaomen beyond the center
Official information places Xiaomen north of Xiyu and notes its bridge, parking area, and loop path. Before walking, orient yourself using the bridge, village, and shore. Spend time comparing rock color and coastal shapes rather than racing through every stop.
The authority traces Xiaomen’s name to a narrow path between basalt cliffs east of the village that looked like a gate from afar. Imagine how residents once moved through this terrain, but stay on public paths and out of closed or unsafe gaps.
Extend the walk toward Whale Cave
After the center, visit Whale Cave with a new question: how do waves meet the rock, and how does the arch change from different angles? Choose a stable viewpoint on the path. There is no reason to approach cliff edges or cross barriers.
If wind or wet ground makes walking uncomfortable, shorten the outdoor portion and return to the exhibits. Wear shoes with grip, keep children away from steep edges, and stop walking before taking photos.
Plan your visit
The official page lists Xiaomen Village No. 11, Xiyu, and Tuesday closure. It gives admission windows of 8:30–12:00 and 13:00–16:30, with a midday reset. Check current notices or call before departure because details can change.
The page currently lists NT$30 full fare and NT$15 concession, with free entry for some eligible visitors, including children under six. Groups of ten or more may reserve by phone three days ahead; others buy tickets on site. Verify eligibility and current prices before going.
Drivers can follow the official route from Magong via County Road 203, Baisha, and the Cross-Sea Bridge. For buses, look specifically for Waian-line services via Xiaomen and check the return trip. Leave slack in a north-loop schedule.
Inside, keep voices low, do not touch exhibits, and follow the posted rules on food and pets. Outside, use established paths and take litter away. Follow staff directions if access changes on the day.
To fit the center into an unhurried north-loop trip, share your date, group size, and transport plans through Chaolü International Travel trip consultation. We can help leave room for the coast and changing conditions.
