Eating Along Penghu's South Ring: A Meal Route Through Fenggui, Shili, Shanshui and Suogang

In short

South-ring sights are close together, but places to eat are spread out, and without a plan it is easy to end up hunting for a restaurant under the midday sun. Following the route through Fenggui, Shili, Shanshui, Suogang and Jing'an, this guide lists the view restaurants, local eateries and cafés along the way, with tips on afternoon breaks and dinner hours for a smooth half-day or full-day trip.

Penghu's south ring is the coastline south of Magong, running through Fenggui, Shili, Shanshui, Suogang and Jing'an. Its sights are only short drives apart, which makes it ideal for a half day or a relaxed full day: listen to the waves at Fenggui Cave in the morning, eat at midday, spend the afternoon on the beach or in a café, and watch the sunset at Shanshui in the evening.

The challenge on the south ring is not a lack of choice but that places are spread out and keep different hours. Many shops take a break between 2 and 5 p.m., and some restaurants focus on dinner. Without planning ahead, it is easy to end up driving back and forth in the midday sun looking for food. Below, meals are fitted into the route in the order you will travel it.

Set the rhythm first: when to eat on the south ring

  • Morning: see the sea-eroded landscape around Fenggui; set out early to beat the sun.
  • Noon: lunch around Suogang, Jing'an and Shili; try to finish before 2 p.m., as many shops then close until early evening.
  • Afternoon: cool off in a café, then head to the beach.
  • Evening: sunset at Shanshui; have dinner on the south ring or head back to town.

Fenggui: see the sea first, then find food

The highlight of Fenggui Cave is the sound the waves make as they surge into the sea-eroded channels, most noticeable at high tide (see our Fenggui Cave guide and the Shetoushan history walk). Stops here are usually short, so you can move straight on to other south-ring villages and have your meal at the next stop.

Suogang, Jing'an and Wukan: lunch and snacks

Options for lunch on the south ring:

  • Snacks and stir-fry: Jinsuogang Eatery (金鎖港飲食店) in Suogang and Xianggelila (湘格里辣) in Jing'an, both quick to serve and good for travelers on a schedule.
  • Casual eatery: A-Shuang Eatery (阿霜小吃部) in Wukan, for travelers who want to sit down for a proper meal.
  • Small bites: MM's Stinky Tofu (ㄇㄇ的臭豆腐) is around Shuangtougua on the way back toward town, good for a craving on the return trip.

View restaurant and dinner

For something relaxed with a sea view, head to Lanka View Restaurant (藍卡景觀餐廳) in Shili; it takes bookings up to about 30 days ahead, and reserving is wise in peak season. For dinner, consider Xianhaiwei Chongqing Grilled Fish (鮮海味重慶烤魚) in Suogang, which mainly opens from early evening, perfect after the Shanshui sunset.

If you plan to eat seafood on the south ring, read our Penghu seafood ordering guide first and ask about market prices and portion sizes, so the bill doesn't come as a shock.

South-ring café: escape the sun before the beach

The south ring has few cafés, but Xiaodaojia branch.cafe (小島家) in Suogang is perfect for the hottest part of the afternoon. Stay until after three when the light softens, then head to Shanshui Beach or Shili Beach for a swim and sunset photos.

Four tips for planning food on the south ring

  1. Mind the afternoon break: many shops close from about 14:00 to 17:00, so don't leave lunch too late.
  2. Check dinner-focused restaurants: places that focus on dinner may not open at lunchtime.
  3. Book the view restaurant: during summer holidays, long weekends and for groups, reserve in advance.
  4. Small shops close often: cafés and eateries change closing days by season, so check before you go.

The south ring is close to Magong and pairs well with a day in town. FAQ

Is Penghu's south ring a half-day or full-day trip?

South-ring sights are short drives apart. Just the highlights such as Fenggui and Shanshui fit into half a day; adding cafés, beach time and the Shanshui sunset makes a more relaxed full day.

Do south-ring restaurants close in the afternoon?

Many shops take a break from about 2 to 5 p.m., such as the eateries around Suogang and Jing'an. Plan lunch between 11:30 and 13:30; dinner-focused places generally open after about 5:30 p.m.

Is it far back to Magong after dinner on the south ring?

The south ring is not far from Magong. The drive back to town usually takes within twenty to thirty minutes, so dinner after the Shanshui sunset won't run too late. Actual driving time depends on route and traffic.
