A Slow Walk to Waian's Three Immortals Pagodas: Reading Xiyu's Fishing Village and Bay
View Waian from its western pagodas, learn about local beliefs and the fishing village landscape, and plan a safe, unhurried Xiyu stop.
On Xiyu, many travelers follow the main road toward lighthouses, forts, and basalt, remembering Waian only as a cluster of fishing village roofs. Give the hill on the village's western side a little time, and the Three Immortals Pagodas turn the view into a question worth reading slowly: why do the bay, homes, harbor, and stone towers share one panorama?
The Penghu National Scenic Area Administration says Waian has eastern and western groups of Three Immortals Pagodas. The western group stands on a cliff overlooking the village, while silver wattle surrounds the eastern group. Its account links the towers to a fishing community's wishes for safety at sea and a long life together. Treat that account as local oral history and belief, rather than a verified historical event.
Look at the village before the towers
At the viewpoint, pause before hunting for the perfect postcard angle. Notice how houses gather along the terrain and how the harbor opens the village to the sea. The western towers are modest in size. Seen with the homes below, their position makes more sense in everyday life. As daylight fades, put a safe return ahead of another photograph.
From afar the three towers look like simple landmarks. Up close, notice their form, material, and arrangement. The official page describes them as tower shaped protective stone markers and records their conical construction. A sight is also a tangible object left by residents. View it from permitted paths; do not climb, disturb stones, or step into vegetation or private property for a shot.
Read the view as fishing village life
Waian is more than one structure. Roofs, coastal roads, the harbor, and slopes show how the settlement lives with its terrain. The official account notes the community's fishing past and the risks of going to sea, explaining the towers as a way to express protection and blessing. Use that story as a clue to local life, and approach the belief with respect.
Photographers can frame the towers, village, and sea together, then look more closely at the lines of roofs and the scale of boats. Without a camera, a few quiet minutes still offer wind, reflected light, and village sounds. Watch both the gusts and the ground, especially after rain or near dusk. There is no reason to approach a cliff edge for a better angle.
A relaxed stop on Xiyu
Make the pagodas a slow stop in a Xiyu trip. After turning into the village, find legal parking and follow the paths and signs you actually see. Navigation may not point to the easiest walking entrance. Give residents room on narrow lanes, and adjust walking time to your group, weather, and conditions underfoot.
The scenic area also highlights the sunset view here. Yet sunset time, cloud, and wind will not follow a fixed itinerary. Leave enough light for the walk back; bring water, a wind layer, and a light. Avoid unfamiliar ground in darkness, especially where there is no barrier. In strong wind or rain, shorten the visit.
A short observation list
- From a safe place, locate the western towers, village, and bay in relation to one another.
- Imagine where families might have watched boats return; use this as an observation exercise, not a claim about the past.
- Expect plants, slopes, and other structures around the towers. Follow signs and stay out of closed areas.
- Keep lanes clear for residents and visitors, and respect privacy when photographing people or homes.
Let Waian slow the journey
The pagodas remind us that Penghu's sea views and everyday life have always existed together. From one hillside, you see both the bay that draws visitors and the lanes and homes that sustain a community. Instead of applying a borrowed label, notice Waian's own terrain, beliefs, and fishing village rhythm.
